SUMMARY

Provides the District with physical therapy services geared to assist special needs students to ensure a positive learning environment that enables these students to benefit from the instructional program.. Works side by side with classroom teachers to provide services to all locations and community sites where there is a District program. Promotes student success, encourages natural supports and provides technical assistance to students with disabilities. Establishes and maintains an atmosphere of mutual respect, self- worth, self-discipline, confidence, cooperation, consideration and responsibility.  Evaluates and develops an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) to meet the specific needs of students who qualify for physical therapy services.

 

MINIMUN REQUIREMENTS

Valid Arizona license of Physical Therapy

Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card

Pediatric physical therapy experience preferred

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

THE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED.

  • Provides physical access to educational activities; movement requirements for daily living and self care; prevocational physical requirements; access to school recreation activities and equipment; physical management components related to psycho-social development, functional communication and transportation to and from school
  • Writes assessment reports of students
  • Participates in meetings to interpret the findings of assessment reports and to make recommendations to school personnel, parents and when appropriate, to agencies and specialists
  • Assists with the development of student IEP's
  • Provides educational physical therapy services to qualified students
  • Participates in the special education process as appropriate, and maintains services and records in compliance with district/state procedures and federal statutes and regulations
  • Consults with classroom teachers and others involved with children in relation to program planning, adapting the physical environment or modifying curricular procedures for specific problems
  • Adapts equipment used in the classroom to meet individual needs for student academic pursuits
  • Advises staff on safety, lifting, positioning and handling techniques to address the physical needs of students
  • Evaluates/advises for mobility needs for transfers, wheelchair, mobility, gait, etc., for students
  • Provides relevant in-service training and on-going activities for students, parents and teachers to increase their understanding and ability to meet the needs of the child in the educational environment
  • Communicates with other professionals working with children in order to coordinate each child's program on an on-going basis
  • Provides training and consultation to instructional aides, teaching assistants, or other individuals in order to provide generalization of skills within the educational environment
  • Assists in determining the need for and receipt of supervision/consultation from other staff or outside agencies
  • Communicates with community agencies, physicians and others, as needed, to coordinate appropriate services for the child

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of disabling conditions that occur before and after birth, as well as the effects on students as related to educational performance
  • Ability to operate standard classroom related learning tools and equipment, including physical therapy related equipment.
  • Knowledge of data usage, including research, collection, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to do detailed mathematical computations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
  • Ability to handle confrontation and conflict in a professional manner

PHYSICAL TASKS

Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is required only to supplement normal sedentary work. Assistance in the event heavy physical exertion is required. Work may involve occasional lifting and carrying weights up to 25 pounds or assisting in moving or lifting children. Moderate walking, stooping, bending, reaching and sitting for extended periods may be required as a normal part of the job. Visual weakness must not prohibit the performance of assigned duties. Verbal communicative ability may be required of public contact positions.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoor school environment.  This position regularly works indoors.  The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times.  Contact with employees, students and public.
